What’s on internet which are useful to family physicians – Nephrology Sites

Nephron Information Centre is a resourceful repository website on kidney diseases. It aims to provide up-to-date information to the public, patients and professionals. The important message they were trying to deliver is that early detection is the most important element in preventing renal illness, hence education has become the most important facilitator for this mission. The website features different columns including patient education, web resources, nephrology references, medical news headlines, nephrology journals, materials on renal nutrition, GFR calculators and search engines for both text search and structured searches. They are also trying to develop a medical wiki, the Kidneywiki, (http://wikikidney.org), which is an open source online encyclopedia which empowers readers to contribute to existing articles and to create articles of their own to facilitate sharing and discussion of knowledge. For physicians, there are contents like clinical practice guidelines, nephrology journal sites and articles, weblinks on nephrology and other useful internet resources.

National kidney foundation (NKF)

National Kidney Foundation is a non profit health organization dedicated to the prevention of kidney and urinary tract diseases, as well as fostering health and well-being of patients with kidney disease. NKF conducts education programmes for public, patients and healthcare professionals. At their website, there are a lot of CME materials for physicians on nephrology and related disciplines. Articles and abstracts on NKF's four professional journals are also available, namely, American Journal of Kidney Diseases, Advances in Chronic Kidney Disease, Journal of Renal Nutrition and the Journal of Nephrology Social Work. Clinical tools for estimation of GFR for adults or children including GFR calculators can be downloaded, and there is a list of frequently asked questions pertaining to the recommendations on GFR estimation.

HDCN – Hypertension, dialysis and clinicalnephrology

Hypertension, Dialysis, and Clinical Nephrology is a resourceful website intended for physicians who treat patients with kidney or renal disease. Maintained by an Editorial Board of kidney disease specialists, it provides up-to-date, well-selected information on renal disorders and their treatment (hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis), and also covering hypertension, dialysis, and clinical nephrology topics. At the website, physicians can have access to frequently asked questions (hypertension, dialysis, and nephrology FAQs), pointers to recent review articles, and summaries of hot new paper and abstracts, and meeting presentations on hypertension, dialysis, and nephrology. Also, information about medical products, services, and drugs related to hypertension, dialysis, and clinical nephrology are available. There are also many links to relevant hypertension / dialysis / transplantation organizations, provider networks and databases.

DASH diet

Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) is a healthy eating habit for normal people as well as patients with hypertension. It can prevent hypertension in normal people and would also help in patients with hypertension. According to the website, the diet would reduce systolic blood pressure by 6 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure by 3 mmHg in healthy subjects, and a drop of 11 mmHg and 6 mmHg for patients with hypertension. DASH diet can be delicious and it is no more expensive than food we take every day. Some recipes were developed to suit the eating habits of local people by the Hong Kong Nephrology Group, and made available at the website for downloading. Some of the examples include 鮮菠蘿炒雞柳,生菜魚肉紅米粥,蜜糖豆松子三文魚塊,芥蘭菜粒蛋白肉碎炒飯,鮮茄豆腐魚湯 脫低脂奶湯底。The Hong Kong Nephrology Group is established by a group of doctors and nurses with interest in the prevention and treatment of kidney diseases. The group is devoted to early detection of renal diseases, hypertension and diabetes mellitus and improvement in dialysis service in Hong Kong. Diabetic Nephropathy Clinical Support – aniPad apps on diabetic nephropathy

Diabetic Nephropathy Clinical Support is a mobile apps on iPad platform, designed to help doctors and other care providers in the management of diabetic nephropathy. Developed by Dr Ho Chung Ping, it is now available for free download by physicians in Hong Kong. The video of the launching lecture of the clinical support apps was uploaded to YouTube at http://youtu.be/6vhShUXBIJM, with all the information one would need on how to use this mobile apps to calculate GFR for a patient. Early and vigorous treatment of diabetic nephropathy will prevent or delay the development of end-stage diabetic nephropathy. This clinical tool was first introduced to the doctors in the scientific program 'Management of diabetic nephropathy' on 14 March, 2012. Apart from resources for doctors and nurses, there are also sections on public education and lecture notes on renal diseases (http://www.dialysis.com.hk/lecture_notes). Renal World is a website with focus on kidney diseases. There is a big library of online calculators for general clinical purposes as well as clinical nephrology purposes, including those for GFR estimations, for dialysis patients, and in critical care. At the same time, RSS feeds of numerous journal articles related to nephrology from different medical journals are available. The author had also put up a number of focus topics in nephrology at the website. These topics include Chronic Kidney Disease, Vascular Calcification, Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetic Nephropathy, Inflammation in Kidney Disease, Nutrition and Kidney Disease, Practice Management, Vascular Access, End Stage Renal Disease, Blood Pressure: Management and Consequences. For each of these issues, there are online weblinks, recent journal articles and frequently asked questions pertaining to the topic. There is also an online tool allowing handy look-up of nutritional information for most common commercially available formulae.
