1. Exercise for Health, Department of Health, HKSAR

Initiated by the Department of Health, the Exercise for Health Project aims at promoting physical activities among members of the public. It will be done through coordinated efforts of the Government, medical practitioners, sports facilitators and the community. Apart from patient information, guidelines for writing exercise prescriptions and community resources in different districts can be found at the website. A certificate course in Exercise Prescription for medical practitioners was organized by HKMA and the course materials are now available online at http://www.hkma.org/latestnews/ExercisePrescriptionCertificateCourse/index.htm.

2. American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)

ACSM is one of the most respected sports medicine and exercise sciences organizations in the world. The journals and guidelines it has issued on sports medicine and exercise prescription were based on consensus after repeated debates and were treated with high regard within the profession. As outlined in its Mission Statement, ACSM integrates scientific researches, education, and practical applications of sports medicine and exercise science to enhance physical performance, fitness and health, and quality of life.

This toolbox resource hosted at the website of US Army Centre for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine (USACHPPM) has relevant links on fitness and Exercise prescription. 'How to Write an Exercise Prescription' is designed to assist healthcare providers in prescribing exercise for their patients. Information is provided on exercise precautions for individuals with specific health issues such as heart disease, diabetes mellitus, lung disease and pregnancy. The document is available for download as a Microsoft Word Document or in a pdf format. "Targeting Fitness" is another toolbox at the website at http://www.hooah4health.com/toolbox/TargetingFitness/default.htm where a lot of links and resources on fitness programmes are available.

ExRx.net (Exercise Prescription on the Net) is a free website intended for the exercise professionals, coaches, and fitness enthusiasts. The Beginner's Page hosts different topics with links and information on weight maintenance, cardio exercises, sample exercises, exercise instructions etc. Other categories of information including kinesiology, aerobic conditioning, fitness testing are also included at the website making it a resourceful website on exercise prescription.

The Physical Activity and Health website provides interesting and useful information on physical activity and health associated issues. The Nutrition and Physical Activity Section focuses on the promotion of nutrition and healthy eating and participation in physical activity as a means of maintaining healthy body weight and reducing the risk of chronic disease. The Primary Prevention Section promotes participation in physical activity in consistence with the National Physical Activity Guidelines. This section of the site contains comprehensive range of topics relevant for health professionals. These topics are categorized as ageing, education and prevention, conditions and diseases, health products and medicines, healthcare systems, rural health, health priorities, services, ethical issues and gene technology.

7. Sport Journal (U.S. Sports Academy)

The Sports Journal, the online publication of US Sports Academy is an quarterly journal since 1999. All articles (full text) of previous issues are available online free of charge. The website is also equipped with a search engine allowing keyword search of all articles.
