What's in the web for family physicians - avian influenza

This is the official U.S. Government Website information on pandemic flu and avian influenza. It provides links to information and materials including fact sheets on vaccines and medications, travel and workplace safety, planning and response, research and related topics. It also includes a link to the "Strategy for Pandemic Influenza," outlining federal government's strategy for handling the possibility of an influenza pandemic.

2. Department of Health, Hong Kong SAR

A dedicated website on avian flu by the Hong Kong Government. Regularly updated situation summary, Alert Response Level information, official guidelines, information on Hong Kong preparedness for influenza, and different versions of fact sheets in different languages are available. Other information at the website includes global statistics, videos for patient education and frequently asked questions. The website of Centre for Health Protection http://www.chp.gov.hk/ also carries updated information on avian flu, it also hyperlinks to the Ministry of Health of the Chinese Central Government (中華人民共和國衛生部) at http://www.moh.gov.cn/ .

3. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

As the principal U.S. agency for health protection of Americans, this web resource on avian influenza includes overviews as well as fact sheets of specific topics. Relevant information materials are organized for different target user groups: health professionals, workers in the poultry industry, travellers and so on. Outbreak information, key facts of the avian flu viruses are also available.

4. Health Protection Agency (HPA)

The HPA looks after public health protection in the United Kingdom. It integrates information and provides support and advice to the National Health Service, local authorities, emergency services, the Department of Health and the devolved administrations. Its website has a link to the Communicable Disease Report Weekly (CDR Weekly) and also a weekly avian influenza news update. It also includes an algorithm for the management of returning travellers from countries affected by avian influenza presenting with febrile respiratory illness.

5. World Health Organization (WHO) - Avian Flu

A comprehensive website on avian influenza with situation updates, fact sheets, frequently asked questions, and regularly updated disease outbreak news. Highlights of situation in the affected area are included. Documents and interview articles available online include WHO outbreak communications guidelines, best practices for communicating with the public during an outbreak, and communicating risk of pandemic to the public. The Department of Communicable Disease Surveillance and Response (CSR) is the WHO agency concerned with infectious diseases. Recent guidelines, recommendations and descriptions of different topics related to avian influenza are also available.

6. ProMED-mail (Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases)

"The global electronic reporting system for outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases and toxins." The site provides up-to-date information on emerging infectious diseases around the world. There are outbreak news, discussion group announcements, recent recalls and alerts, links to maps at location of outbreaks, a FAQ and other useful resources on Internet. The archive of the mailing list is searchable. The content is available in several languages. The programme is maintained by the International Society for Infectious Diseases.

7. EUROPA: Avian Influenza

EUROPA is the European Union's web portal. Its website on avian flu is loaded with resources ranging from basic information of the virus to media releases, outbreak news, meeting notes of working groups and committees, publications and other relevant links in the combat of avian flu of the member states.
