What's in the web for family physicians-hospice and palliative care

1. Alberta Hospice Palliative Care Resource Manual. 2nd ed.

The manual is a good educational resource for primary care physicians on hospice care. The contents include decision making, pain and symptom management on both physical and emotional problems in palliative care. The manual was compiled by the Division of Palliative Care Medicine, University of Alberta in 2001.

2. International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care

The webiste comprises a huge selection of information about hospice and palliative care services. Information like International Hospice & Palliative Care Directory, education materials and journals, conference news are available at the website.

3. Palliative Care Matters

A comprehensive website developed by a medical practitioner in the United Kingdom but links are international. The website offers links including books, journal articles, news and discussion forum. Index of Links page includes guidelines, clinical resources, organizations, journals, ethics, psychosocial aspects, education and research. It is intended for health-care professionals working in palliative care or related fields. Registered users (free registration) would enjoy value-added privileges when re-visiting the site.

4. Palliative Care Handbook

This is a handy reference for doctors and nurses working in the field of palliative care. Different related topics were covered and presented in an easily accessible way. Nurse Maude Palliative Care Formulary Guidelines for Clinical management and Symptom Control were incorporated. The handbook was compiled by palliative care specialists in New Zealand in 2002 and now available online free of charge.

5. End of Life/Palliative Education Resource Center (EPERC)

The EPERC website aims to help dissemination of high-quality, peer reviewed education materials relating to end-of-life care for medical practitioners. Training resources, publications, conference news, and other educational materials from various sources are available.

6. Society for the Promotion of Hospice Care

Power Point slides are available for download for presentations at conferences and symposium (4th Hong Kong Palliative Care Symposium and 13th and 14th Hong Kong International Cancer Congress) and the section on "related website" points to various resources in Hong Kong on hospice care, including Comfort Care Concern Group 贐明會 at http://www.cccg.org.hk, Haven of Hope Christian Service 基督教靈實協會 at http://www.hohcs.org.hk and Bradbury Hospice at http://www.ha.org.hk/bbh/introedu.htm. It also provides a good collection of international sites on hospice and palliative care.

7. American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine

The website comprises a lot of educational materials with book lists, full text articles and videos. There is a section on "Fast Facts" which has a collection of brief, referenced articles on a range of topics in end-of-life and palliative care.
