What’s on the web for family physicians – updates on Diabetes Mellitus

Medscape is a resourceful online medical site which covers topics of most clinical subspecialties. The section on endocrinology features a long list of review articles on important issues associated with management of diabetes, examples include diabetes with pregnancy, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic foot ulcers, hypoglycaemia, diabetic neuropathy and nephropathy. A multimedia library and lectures can also be found.

The site is user-friendly and easy to read for family physicians to keep abreast of current trends in related fields. Free CME credits are also offered at the website for registered users (free registration).

The official website contains plentiful educational information for physicians. Free journal articles and management guidelines are available at the website. The section of Professional Resources Online has the well known ADA Clinical Practice Recommendations, which were developed based on in-depth reviews of the relevant literatures. There are also webcast presentations of the 2013 scientific sessions.

Diabetes Hongkong

Diabetes Hongkong is the only local nonprofit organisation found by profession health care workers for promotion of diabetic patient care and education. The website is a good resource centre of diabetic patient: education materials, videos, publications, public talks, cooking and exercise classes. It is a good site to recommend to diabetic patients who wish to read more about diabetes and diet.

Maintained by the University of California, San Francisco Diabetes Teaching Center, this site provides comprehensive online education resource for patient and professionals. The website offers explanations on different kinds of diabetes, information for the newly diagnosed diabetics, workshop and classes for diabetes. The section on Learning Library offers video lectures, resource materials and mobile apps on patient management of diabetes.

National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP)

The National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) is sponsored by U.S. government with the mission to improve the treatment and outcomes for people with diabetes. It aims to promote early diagnosis, and ultimately to prevent the onset of diabetes. A publication called Guiding Principles for Diabetes Care (http://ndep.nih.gov/publications/PublicationDetail.aspx?PubId=108) is available free at the website. This evidence-based publication outlines important patientcentered principles of diabetes care, helping health care professionals identify people with pre-diabetes and undiagnosed diabetes for treatment aimed at preventing long-term complications.

NDEI.org: Diabetes Education for Healthcare Professionals

NDEI.org is an online resource for Diabetes education for professionals founded almost two decades ago. The website offers information on issues spanning the diabetes continuum from epidemiology and pathophysiology of diabetes and associated

comorbidities to therapeutic options for prevention and treatment. Educational activities include downloadable slides, webcast lectures and interactive case studies on patient management, as well as resources on clinical guidelines and patient education handouts.
